How to Survive the Holidays When Grieving

If you recently lost someone you loved, be it human or pet, you may not feel any joy in your heart.  That is Okay.  You are normal.  Do not listen to people who are trying to tell you should not be experiencing your grief.  What you are going through is your personal experience and you get through it as best you can.

The holidays can also remind you of loved ones who have passed long ago.  You may be feeling totally empty inside.  So how do you go out, entertain and celebrate when you’re feeling empty and lonely?  Remember you don’t have to live up to others people’s expectations.

If you’re grieving a loss, this time of year can be incredibly emotional. There are some good ways to help you cope and survive.

Here Are Tips To Help You:

  • Do not let the holidays control you. Plan what makes you feel comfortable and loved.
  • I personally find hugging a teddy bear to be of great comfort. I have lost all of my family and pets and I know what it feels like and what you are going through.
  • Create a plan to honor your deceased loved ones. Light candles, get some flowers, and set a place for them at the dinner table.  Talk with them - they do listen.
  • It’s perfectly all right to not feel like celebrating a holiday. Do not let anyone make you feel bad because you are not up to celebrating.  You have a right to your feelings.
